Project Descriptions

Citizen Science Outing - This was a fantastic project that was run by the Youth Committee and the Solano Land Trust foundation. It gave the youth the ability to go out and see what nature has in store for them and how ecosystems work. In the picture on the left, you can see that these people are using the quadrat sampling method in order to see how diverse the ecosystem around Rush Ranch is. Definitely a fun project that we may come back to in the future.
No One Eats Alone - This was an event at Crystal Middle School where students would come together in the cafeteria to have lunch with students who would sit there alone every day with no one to talk with or hang out with. With the help of the students, we made the environment better for students so that people didn't have to be alone and instead have fun with the other students.
LIVE 360 EDUCATION AND RECREATION CENTER - Our organization holds one of the properties inside the Solano mall and we mainly use this area to hold chess games and tournaments. People are free to come and play whenever we put out the boards and chairs and it is a great way to have some fun. Due to the Coronavirus, this project has been put on hold as it is unsafe to have gatherings of people, but we intend to have this project resurface again.
Cultural Essay Challenge - This challenge gave students the ability to speak their minds about their culture and express themselves. This also gave students the chance to learn about the cultures of other students and see how their cultures are similar and different. It was an excellent project that helped people feel strongly about their culture by talking in front of others.

Project Descriptions

Mask Distribution - During the time of the Coronavirus pandemic, finding ways to keep yourself and others protected were difficult to find as people still needed to go out and do essential things such as purchase groceries and go to their jobs. The SCYC decided that to help reduce the risk of the Coronavirus spreading, we would distribute masks to the community. By the end, we had given away over 150 masks which we considered a success as that is 150 fewer people that are walking around without masks.
Coffee with the Police - During the time of 2020, there were and still are incidents where the police can be seen not showing signs of using the correct tactics to approach certain situations. One of them is the incident with George Floyd where he was killed by an officer when he was left unable to breathe. The cause for this was a counterfeit $20 bill and whether he knew that it was fake is irrelevant due to the fact that the police chose to use very aggressive tactics. With all of these tragic events caused by the police, the Suisun Police Department decided to hold a meeting, which the SCYC attended, to assure the community that they were being protected by rational police officers.
Rock The Vote - The ability to vote is something that young people aren't taking advantage of much as it allows for their voices to be heard by the government. It isn't only the young, but others who find voting to be unnecessary or something that doesn't matter. The purpose of the Rock the Vote campaign to encourage others to vote and to show that the process is so easy that it doesn't take up too much time of someone's day to complete. The ability to vote is great and we want to make sure that people are using it.
Pop up School Supply Event - Due to the pandemic, we couldn't help out during the event, but it is still one of our projects nonetheless. Many backpacks with school supplies were given to those who needed one and all I have to say is thank you to those who ran the event.
Suisun City Virtual Candidate Forum - This is the 3rd Suisun City Library Candidate Forum, but this year due to the pandemic, it will be our first Virtual Candidate Forum" moderated by the Suisun City Youth Commission. It's the first Candidate Forum in our region and possibly in the country moderated by youth. This will be a great experience for us and allow youth to have a part in deciding what is best for the city.
